One time, our parents left for a few days, for a much deserved getaway with each other. We were all so happy for them, as evidenced by the parting words of one of my sisters to them, “We will miss you but we’re SO happy you’re going.”

As happy as we were though, we love our parents, and the house felt very lonely without them. So we did what every naughty teenager is supposed to do when their parents leave, we threw a party!

There was much laughing as we talked about our rebelliousness that wasn’t really rebelliousness. We loaded up the car with who was home, (you can tell the house is empty when EVERYONE fits into one five-seater car!) and went shopping. We pulled up to the drive-thru of McDonalds for $1 ice coffees all around, and Jon made a comment about how homeschooled we are, going on a family trip to Zehrs and Freshco, with Jon making use of the time in the car to sew his shorts.

When we arrived home, all hands were on deck making sushi, summer rolls, and miso soup. Of course, you can’t have a true Thomson party without a soundtrack, so music blazed from Micaiah’s laptop, and our twin nieces danced in the kitchen in the midst of the supper prep.

A suggestion was made to send a picture of the sushi to Mom and Dad, but we decided better of it, because we did not want them to think that we enjoyed having them gone. No sir. They will hear all about it when they get home anyway.

The pride and glory of our party was a video Naomi made on her iPod. With beautiful Chinese music in the background, it featured all of our homemade Japanese food. First sushi, then more sushi. Then summer rolls, followed by some deluxe summer rolls. Finally, the lid lifted off of some miso soup. Now here’s the really exciting part of the video, I’m going to spoil it for you. It switches over to the buffet, where we have some rice, vegetables, and sauces.

The video was promptly posted on social media, accompanied by such hashtags as, #theparentsaregone and #sob

If I were to add, I might have said #Japan150party #oopswrongcountry

The night was finished off with a Jackie Chan movie, ice cream sandwiches, and the promise of another (less work-intensive) party the next day.
